Today we hear two settings of the hymn melody by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) as the prelude and offering voluntary (BWV 636 and 683). The postlude, a variation from Organ Sonata No. 6 by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), is also based on the same melody, soloed out first by the feet, then by the hand. In this fiery and virtuosic variation, Mendelssohn seemed to be depicting the petitions, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
P.S. There is extra credit if you can tell the organist the number of petitions in the Lord’s Prayer.
